With the Velarray sensor, which can be seamlessly embedded in both autonomous vehicles and advanced driver-assist safety ADAS systems, Velodyne LiDAR again sets the industry standard for image quality and functionality delivered in smaller, more cost-effective form factors. Its surround-view sensors provide up to degree coverage at long range and have been installed in thousands of vehicles.
It provides up to a degree horizontal and degree vertical field-of-view, with a meter range even for low-reflectivity objects. It has a target price in the hundreds of dollars when produced in mass volumes. So let's dig a little deeper and show how this amazing sensor functions. First below left is an image showing the characteristic front lens assembly. Notice that there are two "blocks" -- a top and a bottom, which each contain 32 laser diodes for a total of The laser beams exit the device on the outer lenses and return to photo-detectors through the middle lenses, using time-of-flight TOF to determine distance.
Below right is a view of the rear of the device. There are a couple of interesting structures to note in the rear of the Velodyne.
NGP Standards and Specifications
For example, there are four banks of laser diodes, each containing 16 lasers; in the image below leftBruce is pointing to the "top right" laser diode bank. The lasers are precisely and painstakingly?
Bruce is pointing to the top avalance photodiode board in the image below center. All of the timing, control, and reception signals are routed to a "main PCB" just under the top of the device. While on their hompage, I was also reminded of the very cool, Grammy-Nominated RadioHead Music Video see below for the song "House of Cards" that features Velodyne-generated 3D point-clouds in addition to spatial data from Geometric Informatics ' camera system. To me, the most curious part of the video is where you can clearly make out the power lines in the urban point-clouds! Power lines are generally quite small, making them difficult to resolve at large distances, yet the Velodyne seems to see them just fine -- impressive!
For those who are curious how this music video was produced, check out the video about the production below. When I get some spare time, I'll have to go take a look at how they're doing their cloud visualization -- most of the systems I've used are based on an OpenGL desktop application.
When we were working on that video, we actually discovered a lot of great applications for modern filmmaking that we've been working on putting into films. I think it's only a matter of time before we can start capturing better results with "non-participating" media like smoke and glass. On the film we're working on right now for Martin Scorsese, we're capturing most of the sets with lidar and including color values for all the vertices so we can reconstruct not just the XYZ values of geometry in the scene, but also RGB.
One of the biggest things we wanted to do after shooting that video was set up a lidar system at 24Hz synced with a traditional RGB motion picture camera via beamsplitter so we could capture RGBZ data.
It's possible that we could one day automate a lot of things that are presently done in visual effects with manual labor. Sadly it's on the back burner for lack of research funds, and we're too damn busy with the work we've already got in front of us. Glad to see someone appreciated that video at least on a technical level.
And forget trying to explain to the "creatives" what we were doing. No one really had too much of a clue what was going on, they wanted to know if they'd get something cool at the end. Props to them for taking the chance. And when you see chunks of his head flying around, that's because we were wacking the scanner periodically because the director thought it looked too clean and real.
We also ended up decimating the data set to make it look pixelated. We were recording so much data from his face that it looked like a complete mesh, and with the intensity values applied, it just looked like we shot him with a regular camera in black and white. Would someone be kind enough to please point one to a dataset using velodyne? There are probably others too This is a great article. Apparently Blip was undergoing some " shrinking pains "?

Apart from being affordable, small and versatile, the manufacturer stresses how 3D lidar systems can help increase the overall safety of autonomous systems, in addition to offering mapping and localization capabilities. As a standalone solution, it can be used for low-speed applications.
The Velabit has already been used with the Robotic Pegasus Mini, an unmanned, autonomous ground and air vehicle that uses lidar for localization and more.

In recent years, dozens of lidar startups have been created to challenge industry leader Velodyne. They've all made big promises about better prices and performance. But that piece didn't go into much detail about individual lidar companies—largely because most companies were closely guarding information about how their technology worked. Ars has now been in contact with senior executives from at least eight lidar companies as well as others involved in the industry as customers or analysts.
These conversations have provided a lot of insight not only into trends in the lidar industry in general but also about the technology and business strategy of individual companies. Today, there are three big ways that lidar products differ from one another.
And after laying these approaches out, it's easier to grasp the technology of ten leading lidar companies. To keep this survey of the lidar landscape manageable, I'm sticking to independent companies that focus primarily on the lidar business.
That means I won't cover Waymo's homebrew lidar technology, the lidar startups GM and Ford acquired inor the lidar efforts of bigger companies like Valeo maker of the lidar in Audi's and versions of the A7 and A8Pioneer, or Continental. It's hard to get these larger companies to give us details about their lidar technology—and there's plenty of ground to cover without them. The basic idea of lidar is simple: a sensor sends out laser beams in various directions and waits for them to bounce back.
Because light travels at a known speed, the round-trip time gives a precise estimate of the distance. While the basic idea is simple, the details get complicated fast. Every lidar maker has to make three basic decisions: how to point the laser in different directions, how to measure the round-trip time, and what frequency of light to use. We'll look at each of these in turn. Beam-steering technology: Most leading lidar sensors use one of four methods to direct laser beams in different directions two companies I cover here—Baraja and Cepton—use other techniques that they haven't fully explained :.

This increased capacity, in turn, means that each individual sensor costs less to make. Our goal is the democratization of transportation safety by making it accessible to every man, woman, and child in the world as quickly as possible. The price cut is good news for users outside of the autonomous vehicle industry, too. These less expensive sensors will be more accessible at their lower price point, and less expensive to experiment with.
